The Brazilian book and exhibition As Meninas do Quarto 28 inspired two Brazilian professors of communication and memories, Dr. Barbara Heller and Dr. Priscila F. Perrazzo, to have a closer look at the book As Meninas do Quarto 28/The Girls of Room 28. They published a paper on it and, in 2017, invited the author Hannelore Brenner to seminars in their Universities in São Paulo, the Universidade Municipal de Săo Caetano do Sul and Universidade Paulista.
Together with Karen Zolko and Dodi Chansky, Barbara and Priscila also organized a panel-discussion on 27 September 2017 in the Galeria de Janete Costa in Recife, where the exhibition was on display during September-October 2017. This event was generously supported by the German Consul General in Recife, Maria Koenning-de Siqueira Regueira, who welcomed the guests and invited them after the event to snacks and refreshments.
The encounters and common activities developed into a friendship and led to a new plan: to create a bridge between a German university and the two Brazilian universities where Barbara and Priscila are teaching - the Universidade Municipal de São Caetano do Sul and the Universidade Paulista.
The idea is to to organize, at a university level, seminars, lectures and events on the issue of history, oral history and memory, memory and identity, memory and media communication, Holocaust and the refugee problem viewed from the Brazilian and the German and European perspectives.
As it was the story of "The Girls of Room 28" and the diary of Helga Pollak that brought us together, we plan that our exhibition will be shown in the frame of these academic activities.
We have a growing professional team getting involved in our project and appreciate any support that helps us make our plans come true - to build a German-Brazilian bridge and inspire the transatlatic dialogue with topics arising from our wide range of common interests.
