What to do with a very special gift that not only warms up my heart but shows, why a group of people - members of the Clube de Leitura in Brazil - have read the Brazilian edition of the book "The Girls of Room 28" and declared it their "book of the month"?

A special Christmas message from Vanessa Cazaratto, founder of the Reading Club, reached my Brazilian friends Karen Zolko, Dodi Chansky, Renate Müller and me two days ago:

We thought about sending you a Christmas Card, but we wanted more. So, "Travelling stories" was born -

our thank-you card for you!

The Clube de Leitura focuses on nonfiction books and biographies. Members of the club read one book each month and have a virtual meeting to discuss their impressions. Books are chosen by voting. They choose a topic and members suggest titles. All suggested books are put to vote. The book that receives the most votes is put on the agenda for the members to read and eventually to exchange their impressions.

O Clube de Leitura tem seu foco em livros e biografias não-ficção. Os sócios do Clube leem um livro por mês e se reúnem mensalmente para discutir suas impressões. Os livros são escolhidos através de votação. Os membros escolhem um tópico e sugerem os títulos. Todos os livros sugeridos são colocados em votação. O livro que recebe mais votos é colocado na ordem do dia para que os membros o leia e, eventualmente, troquem suas impressões.

Shortly after Karen called me up to tell me the news, I had a virtual meeting with the founder and manager of the "Clube de Leitura", Vanessa Cazaratto, a young journalist and charming woman. Good chance would have it that the translater of the book into Portuguese and good friend of mine, Renate Müller, is my guest these days. So the conversation went easily, but very emotional at the same time. Of course I felt honored by Vanessa's and her group's appreciation of my book and wondered: Why? How did it happen that they chose my book of all books of the category they were looking for?

I asked Vanessa, to let me know a little bit more about their reasons and arguments. Today I got her answer; and also an echoe from Meire, member of the group. I am happy to publish what they wrote.

Thank you, dear members of the Clube de Leitura!

Pouco tempo depois do telefonema de Karen me dando a notícia, tive um encontro virtual com a fundadora e responsável pelo “Clube de Leitura”, Vanessa Cazaratto, uma jovem e charmosa jornalista.

Por sorte, Renate Müller, minha grande amiga e tradutora do livro para o português, está hospedada em minha casa. Isso facilitou muita nossa conversa cheia de emoções.

Me senti honrada pela escolha do meu livro e, ao mesmo tempo, fiquei intrigada e perguntei: Por quê? Como o grupo escolheu meu livro entre tantos outros bons livros existentes?

Pedi à Vanessa que me contasse um pouco mais sobre seus motivos e argumentos e hoje recebi sua resposta, bem como um eco de Meire, uma integrante do grupo. Fico feliz em publicar o que ambas escreveram para mim.

Vanessa is the creator of "Histórias Reais (H.R.) - Clube de Leitura" a graduate in journalism. She discovered her passion for true stories in early age and is dedicated to research and record true stories. The boook "As Meninas do Quarto 28" was an inspiration for her.

Hannelore Brenner's book was a wonderful surprise for us. “As Meninas do Quarto 28” certainly is one of the best we've ever read. Hannelore Brenner masterfully presents a strong, complex and emotional theme in a loving, respectful and responsible writing.

Through the book “As Meninas do Quarto 28”, we learned about the ghetto Theresienstadt, unknown to most readers of the club. We were also introduced to what an engaged educator is capable of, to the conflicts of those persecuted during war and to the power of art. Hannelore strikes the perfect balance between the nasty aspects of war and the little beauties of life, human’s evil and sensitivity and the pain and the need to honor one's story.

We in our club lived for a month in the company of a book that made us seek to know more about the subject, researching additional information and reflecting a lot on various issues. It was a very rich reading and it provided valuable interactions between club members.

Fomos apresentados também ao que um educador engajado é capaz, aos conflitos de perseguidos durante a guerra e ao poder da arte. Hannelore consegue o perfeito equilíbrio entres os aspectos asquerosos de uma guerra e as pequenas belezas da vida. Entre a maldade e sensibilidade humanas. Entre a dor e a necessidade de honrar a própria história e dos seus.

Vivemos um mês na companhia de um livro que nos fez buscar saber mais sobre o assunto pesquisando informações complementares e refletindo bastante sobre diversas questões. Foi uma leitura muito rica e que proporcionou interações valiosas entre os membros do clube.

Meire, a member of and contributor to Histórias Reais - Clube de Leitura, is a voracious reader. Since she was a child, she saw in books the opportunity to travel, interact and get to know other realities.

My name is Meire Elem. I am a contributor to our club because I believe real stories have the power to change lives and promote a better future. I read the book "As Meninas do Quarto 28" and I consider Hannelore's work as an accurate, informative and sensitive narrative.

Here are some points that touched me:

• The richness of detail that explains, contextualizes and proves the facts.
• The strength that the Art has, like in the Brundibár performances, when the children didn’t wear the yellow star and they felt free. That really touched me. The way the author told the story made me see those moments.
• The book deeply touched me in many moments - in the accounts of pain and suffering, especially in the passages about the strength that came from friendship and art - music, acting and drawing.
• It impressed me to learn how the caregivers of these girls tried to save not only the physical lives of their protegées, but how they tried to save them  mentally and how they helped to shape their  character.

For me the message was that regardless of the environment or circumstances we live in, we can be happier if there are people who help us see beyond the difficulties.
